Edison News & Announcements

News and announcements

the University of North Texas TRIO Talent Search program has officially received funding to continue serving students for the next five years! 🎉

This is exciting news for our partnership with Gainesville ISD and, most importantly, for the students and families we have the privilege of supporting.

What does this mean for Gainesville ISD?

This renewed funding means that TRIO Talent Search will continue providing academic, career, and college-readiness support to eligible students in grades 7 - 12. Students may qualify for the program based on meeting one or more of our eligibility criteria, including:

  • Being the first in their family to go to college

  • Meeting federal income eligibility requirements
  • Being a high-achieving student with an expressed need for academic, career, or college support

Through the program, students have access to individualized guidance and resources designed to help them successfully navigate high school, explore postsecondary opportunities, prepare for college and careers, and ultimately achieve their educational goals.

New Director of Finance- Melody Parr

Gainesville Independent School District is pleased to announce the hiring of Melody Parr as the district’s new Director of Finance.

Mrs. Parr brings more than 20 years of experience in school finance to the role, along with a strong track record of fiscal responsibility, strategic planning, and employee support. Most recently, she served as Business Manager for Chico ISD, where she worked for six years and successfully increased the district’s fund balance year after year while maintaining a focus on financial stewardship.

Before her time at Chico ISD, Parr worked in Accounts Payable at Bowie ISD and served as Business Manager at Gold-Burg ISD, gaining extensive experience in multiple areas of school business operations.

Parr is a lifelong resident of Texas and has lived in several communities throughout the state, including Gainesville. Her connection to Gainesville ISD goes back to her childhood, when she attended McMurry Elementary School in fifth grade and Gainesville Junior High in sixth grade. She graduated as Valedictorian of her class from Saint Jo High School in 1992.

Parr earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Western Governors University in May 2020. Throughout her career, she has developed expertise in data analysis, policy and procedure implementation, communications, Ascender software, and leadership.

As she begins her new role with Gainesville ISD, Parr says one of her top priorities is supporting the people who make the district successful.

"I believe it's important to take care of employees and their needs and to make them feel supported," Parr said. "When employees feel valued and supported, they are better able to focus on serving students and helping them succeed."

Outside of her professional career, Parr is a proud mother of four daughters, Katie, Rachel and her husband Ben, Genna, and Josie. She is also a proud Nana to her grandson, JJ.

Please join Gainesville ISD in welcoming Melody Parr back to the Leopard family!

2026-2027 Academic Calendar first day August 12 and last day may 27

We are excited to share that the Board of Trustees has approved the 2026-2027 Academic Calendar!  Following months of hard work by our DEIC, staff surveys, family surveys, and finally a staff & family vote for the final two calendar options, the Board was presented with Calendar A for approval.  To view a printable calendar, visit our calendar page.

Important points to note:

  • The first day of school is August 12. The last day of school is May 27.
  • This calendar is a hybrid calendar.  Students will not begin having Mondays off until March, with the exception of the holidays which fall on Monday.
  • The number of student days has increased from 158 to 165.  This gave us more flexibility and allowed for shorter instruction days (see new start/end times below).
  • The instructional day has been shortened by 25 minutes. A slight adjustment was made to each campus start and end time.
  • Due to less minutes of instruction each day, there are zero banked days/minutes in this calendar.  This means that if school has to close for any reason, those days/minutes will have to be made up on an alternate day.
  • There are no longer any student intervention days on the calendar.
  • Spring Break is the third week in March, to reflect the academic calendar set by NCTC. This was a recent change made by NCTC and differs from the calendars sent out to vote on previously.
  • Teachers will have a Friday workday at the end of every grading period. This results in students having four Fridays off, in addition to the Friday holidays.

New Start/End Times
Head Start 7:25 A.M. - 3:05 P.M.
Edison Elementary 7:35 A.M. - 3:15 P.M.
Chalmers Elementary 7:45 A.M. - 3:25 P.M.
Gainesville Intermediate 7:55 A.M. - 3:35 P.M.
Gainesville Junior High 8:05 A.M. - 3:45 P.M.
Gainesville High School 8:15 A.M. - 3:55 P.M.
